Section B, Creating texts, is the part of the course that feels the most open, and that is exactly why students freeze. There is no single prompt to react to and no obvious right answer, so they stare at the page. The fix is not more inspiration. It is a repeatable process that turns a Framework of Ideas into a finished piece you can walk in already knowing.
Read the mentor texts like a writer
Most students read mentor texts for what they are about. Read them instead for what they do. Notice how each one opens, how it uses form, how it holds an idea across a whole piece and lands it at the end. You are collecting moves you can borrow, not summaries you can quote.
Find your angle inside the Framework
The Framework gives you a broad set of ideas. Your job is to narrow it to one you genuinely have something to say about. A small, sharp idea you can develop beats a large, vague one every time. Pick the angle first, before you worry about form.
- Choose one idea from the Framework, not four
- Choose a form that suits that idea, not the one you find easiest
- Decide your purpose: to reflect, to argue, or to explain
- Plan the accompanying explanation of your choices as you go
Prepare, then adapt
The students who do best in Section B do not invent a piece on exam day. They build one in advance, refine it until they know it cold, and then adapt it to the task in front of them. Preparation is not cheating the creativity out of it. It is what lets you be creative under pressure instead of blank.
A prepared writer adapts. An unprepared writer invents, and invents badly under a clock.
Build the process once and Section B stops being the scary one. It becomes the section where you already know your move before you sit down.
